detailed report: Sizilien - der barocke Süden der Insel
To explore the south of Sicily, it is advisable to choose, which is heavily developed and a cultural and historical treasure is a central point Syracuse or Ortigia peninsula.
From there we took several walks and sightseeing:
This perfect blend of nature, culture, history and way of life has Sicilian awarded this holiday.
Travel time: The journey time in the fall / late autumn - when here already prevails the misty November weather in Germany - we can highly recommend it, if you like something more moderate temperatures and less heat. The risk this time of year is that there may be days with heavy rains.
Accommodation: We had decided to stay at Syracuse / Ortigia for two reasons. On one hand we liked the relatively favorable position to undertake the various tours in the south of Sicily, on the other hand Ortigia is a very pretty, baroque city on a peninsula that offers a lot of attractions. There are countless beautiful apartments / flats in Ortigia, but we have chosen one still in Syracuse (before it goes over the bridge to the peninsula) because parking is extremely difficult in Ortigia. Only the parking spaces marked with white lines are free, in the blue marked parking tickets tickets must be used. Our apartment was on the main street Corso Umberto the first floor, was very nicely furnished and spacious. Only the traffic noise through the cobbled streets was getting used to.
Car Hire: Car hire is essential, in our view, because to the secluded hiking areas are just no public transport. Our car (Fiat 500) cost for the 7 days, including additional driver and all insurances without excess only 127 €.
Food: How good is the Sicilian cuisine, can probably imagine everyone. We ate dinner in various, delicious restaurants in Ortigia, provides us at the grocery store with great meats and cheeses. And as a highlight, there were the end of the evening always pistachio cheesecake and ice cream in the ice cream shop next door.
Hiking: Although there are some lovely walks in the Rother guide to Sicily, one must remember that Sicily is not really a typical hiking country. Often tours are no longer accessible by landslides and also we had to be flexible here.
Culture: The perfect blend of nature and culture remains at this holiday for us in memory. The millennia-old history has left many traces in Sicily, starting with the Bronze Age, about the Greeks, Romans, and then to leave an architectural testimony in baroque richness of yesteryear.
