There is religious freedom in Bali. Approximately 90% of the population are Hindu. Officially, this religion is known as Agama Hindu Dharma.
Umbul-umbul (Javanese, Balinese) is a type of flag, attached to a long pole and is present in folk culture of the Javanese and Balinese people. Traditionally, it serves as a banner and is s carried in religious processions.
These flags are an important element of Balinese Hindu celebrations, ceremonies and festivals and can be seen at virtually all temples. During religious processions the umbul-umbul are carried, often painted with a snake dragon.
You can also find them along the roadsides and on beaches.
Each color of a flag has its own meaning. Green stands for happiness, blue for fertility, white for purity, red for strength and courage and yellow for eternity.
In summary, Balinese believe, these flags will bring happiness, prosperity and joy and will deter evil away.
